Camino Food

Food found on the Camino de Santiago.

Desayuno or Breakfast is typically a piece of toast or a croissant and a cafe (if you drink it). At bars, you can also usually order zumo de narenja, or freshly squeezed orange juice. Desayuno at an alburgue or cafe costs about 3-5 Euros.

La Comida or Lunch is typically a bocadilla or sandwich from your local town bar. A bocadilla is a long piece of bread, like a baguette, with meat and cheese. La Comida is served usually until 3:00 p.m. Bocadillas cost about 3 to 5 Euros.

La Cena or Dinner is typically called Menu del Dia or Peregrino Menu. It is served starting 7:00 or 7:30 at the town bar. We get to choose from a variety of options for First Plate, additional options for Second Plate, and then are given Postre (dessert) or cafe. Menu del Dias range in cost from 7 to 11 Euros.

First Plate options are usually soup, salad, warm vegatables, or some kind of pasta.

Second Plate options are usually a choice between fish, chicken, and maybe pork and rarely beef. All second plates are served with Patatas Fritas (French Fries). You cannot escape french fries, no matter how hard you try. They are everywhere.

Postre or Dessert is usually a choice between fruit (sometimes fresh, sometimes canned, but usually it was a slice of melon), tarta (cake), or ice-cream.

Food items I try to carry with me in my backpack and eat for breakfast or lunch: salami or salchichon, olives, bread or croissants, hard boiled eggs, cheese, and an apple or two. (Food weighs a TON, but it´s better to buy it at the supermercado or grocery store and have it with you, just in case.)

Food I LURVE and would eat my weight in if I could: Fresh Croissants. (And chocolate ice-cream, but that should go without saying.)

Food I am getting tired of: Breakfast and Lunches. It´s the same thing every day.

Favorite Spanish Dish: Castillian garlic soup. Warm and yummy.

    Hey Luci,

What? No sweaty back pack bread for breakfast? Tonight I thought I would google to see if I could find your blog. Recognized the bread photo immediately.

I think about you all the time and the great photos you took. Got a great new panasonic camera for Christmas and now aspire to be just like you and take amazing photos.

    Miss you guys
